The School of Community Health and Midwifery aims to develop students to be solution focussed individuals who will be well equipped to enable, stimulate and promote health and wellbeing within their communities and beyond. It is our goal to work in partnership with our students so that they are able to achieve their full potential and in doing so facilitate them to make a difference within the communities in which they serve.


About the School

The School of Community Health and Midwifery has approximately 1,000 students and 70 members of academic staff. It celebrates a wide range of programmes that have been developed to meet the current health agendas in Health and Social Care, Midwifery, Sexual Health, Family and Community Health, Public Health, Counselling and Psychological Therapies, and Homeopathy. As a result of this we have a number of service level agreements with a range of service provider organisations across the North West of England and work collaboratively with our local FE colleges, statutory and independent healthcare providers, voluntary sector and charitable organisations.

Within an increasing emphasis on integrated care, our courses offer students the opportunity to study from foundation degree level through to postgraduate entry where working as part of the wider team is key to responding to the diverse nature of contemporary health and social care agenda. We offer a rich, stimulating and supportive learning environment that is underpinned through dynamic, high-quality education, research and knowledge transfer

Courses are approved and monitored by nine nationally recognised professional statutory regulatory bodies which enable students to meet national standards for education and training and allow them to be eligible to register on completion of their course.

The School aims to:

  • Facilitate access to community health and midwifery education through widening participation
  • Provide potential employers with skilled and knowledgeable graduates and professionals who are able to contribute to the reduction of health inequalities and improvement of health outcomes for individuals, groups and communities
  • Develop positive, collaborative relationships with all stakeholders and promote multi-professional team working
  • Undertake research and knowledge transfer activities and underpin all learning with research-informed teaching
