CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE

The UCLan Confucius Institute launched in 2008 and is a partnership between UCLan, Beijing International Studies University, and Hanban. Since its launch, UCLan CI has focused on activities that broaden the cultural flavour and landscape of Preston, and the larger Lancashire community, by staging cultural and educational events and activities in Preston and other surrounding towns, local libraries and museums, schools and other such places.

The UCLan CI often holds its popular “China Day” event in Preston’s Flag Market Square and local schools, an activity that provides taster sessions of Chinese culture through Chinese calligraphy & brush painting, tea ceremonies, martial arts demonstrations & training, and much more. We have also been able to stage fabulous Chinese New Year gala productions at venues like the Charter Theatre, performed by arts troupes from China, which are able to bring together the local community to experience one of the most famous of all of the traditional Chinese festivals. UCLan CI also holds its yearly Kite Festival and participates in the annual regional Confucius Institute Dragon Boat Race.

UCLan CI also works closely with the local council and Lancashire Cultural Services on many events, such as guest talks and lectures at the various establishments across Lancashire, and larger projects such as the “Chinese Lives in Lancashire” photography project, which chronicled the lives and experiences of Chinese people who currently live in Lancashire. This project resulted in a touring exhibition and a book publication.

UCLan CI provides many opportunities to students and members of the public alike, with valuable opportunities to experience Chinese culture and learn Mandarin Chinese language.
